Torque Converter Replacement 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 in Bowling Green, KY
August 30, 2024
Typically when you drive a mid 2010s Chevy truck and you feel that terrible "Chevy Shimmy", you know its going to be a bad day. When these torque converters (TC) go out on this unit (6l80), it usually takes the transmission with it. Every time you feel that "Shimmy", you are actually feeling the torque converter clutch engage, and the clutch material is failing every single time. When this happens, metal is put throughout the entire transmission, causing further failures elsewhere.
Now, you know you are lucky when you come to us and we are able to fix the issue with (mostly) just a torque converter. We had a customer bring us his truck with a really bad shutter, it was reading at almost 150 rpms on the scanner. That is a pretty good signifier that the customer will have larger issues than the TC once we get into it, so we let him know ahead of time. In this rare case, our customer got exceptionally lucky. The TC in his unit had just started failing, there was almost no metal inside the unit.
So what did we do in this case? Well this customer got a steal. We put a new PR valve in it, updated the TECHM to disable lockup in the lower gears, new filter, TC, and the customer was good to go. No hard part damage to be seen inside this transmission at all! It looked mint! Why charge the customer an arm and a leg for no good reason, he came in with an almost perfect transmission internally, so lets keep it that way! Now our customer is safe to drive his vehicle after getting Transmission Repairs in Bowling Green, KY.
