Fluid Replacement on a 2017 Corvette Stingray in Bowling Green, KY

Rumble strip Rumble strip, shimmy shimmy shimmy. This is what our customer was feeling in his beautiful Corvette before he brought it to us. He had just bought this vehicle for his retirement, secondhand but still a lovely vehicle. What would cause a vehicle with only 70,000 miles on it to mess up like this? I'll tell you what, the wrong fluid.

You see, the eight speed transmissions (8l90, 8l45, 8l80) all have a common issue from the factory. You see, during production GM decided to use a special type of fluid when building these units. Of course tests were done and it seemed to work beautifully, or so they thought. Several years after the vehicles went off the line it was discovered that, over time, the fluid degrades quicker and causes the torque converter to have a vibration. This became such a common problem that they produced a bulletin for techs like us to read over it and see what could be causing this. Bar in mind Torque Converter issues are so common in GM vehicles before this time that we all expected it, we just didn't expect fluid to actually be the solution. Typically replacing fluid for internal issues is a very bad idea as it will cause many larger issues in the long term.

So what did we do? Exactly what the bulletin suggests! We took the original "black label" fluid out of the vehicle, replaced the internal filter, and installed the new "blue label" fluid. Of course the process is more convoluted than that, taking the pan off of one of these bad boys is a task in and of it self. We did a flush to get all of the original fluid out as well. Once the job was complete our little "Shimmy Shimmy Shimmy" went away, crazy how such a small aspect of a transmission can solve so many problems.
