Differential Replacement in a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

So you just bought a salvaged vehicle thinking it would be simple body work replacements and then you can be done with it? Well that is what our customer thought, but it seems he was mistaken. This customer is a do it yourself type of man, diagnosing and solving problems with his vehicles his entire life. He hasn't ever done a vehicle quite like this Jeep though. When driving the vehicle you could hear a sort of grinding noise that felt like it was coming from the driver side front. After doing several oddball jobs to the wheel, struts, brakes, etc, he decided to bring it to a general mechanic to get the vehicle looked at.

Floyds Garage took the vehicle and did some preliminary inspections, determining that it was likely in the differential or AWD unit. Floyds does not work on those units but instead brings those to us. After it was dropped off to us we got to looking. On a test drive we noticed the grinding complaint, so we instantly went to a lift when we got back to the shop. On the lift we discovered what looked to be fluid residue on the frame itself, although it looked partially dry. We took the check plug out and inserted a ziptie to determine the depth of fluid, surprisingly it was completely empty! This can only really mean one of two options. One, it was emptied by the customer (unlikely). Two, there is a leak somewhere. Can you guess which one our customer had?

We looked further forward, and low & behold, the front differential was literally cracked in half! This was crazy to see in person as it is so rare, I guess that wreck the original owner had was much worse than we thought! The customer was happy we discovered this issue, ordered his own differential, and we quickly installed it upon its arrival.
