2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 Transmission Replacement in Bowling Green, KY
February 22, 2025

When a transmission goes out around here, it’s no surprise that people bring their vehicles to Wholesale Transmission Center. That’s exactly what happened when a customer rolled in with their 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500, complaining that the truck shook like crazy in higher gears and barely moved in third gear. After hearing their concerns, we were more than happy to take a look and see what was going on.
Ben Jr., our lead diagnostician, started with a scan and a test drive. Surprisingly, no codes showed up, but the fluid told a different story—it was full of metal shavings, a clear sign of internal failure. Out on the road, the symptoms were exactly as described—third gear was completely gone, and neither fifth gear nor reverse worked either.
Now, here’s the thing—Third, Fifth, and Reverse all rely on the same internal drum inside the 6L90 transmission. And if there’s one thing we’ve seen over and over again, it’s that this drum is prone to cracking under heavy load. Given the nature of this truck’s use, that was almost certainly the root cause of the failure.
So, what’s the solution? While we love building transmissions in-house, for fleet vehicles and work trucks, we often recommend a remanufactured transmission due to the unbeatable warranty coverage. After discussing the options, the customer agreed that a reman unit was the best route. One transmission replacement and tune later, the Silverado was shifting like new, and the customer was back on the road, ready to put the truck back to work in Bowling Green, KY.
