2017 Ram 2500 Transmission Rebuild in Bowling Green, KY
January 6, 2025
Another week here at Wholesale Transmission means another 68rfe as been repaired or rebuilt. Locally I would say Ram trucks are the least common of the domestic series, but we still see quite a few of them. In this case, we are working on a newer style one. Most people who drive these trucks have them supped up, cranking more HP and torque to the wheels than factory by a very large margin. This specific customer uses this for a work truck, but he still has some upgrades to get that extra power in it. The customer came in with a simple complaint, the truck is in Limp mode and has no 4th or 5th gear. So what did we do?
First, we diagnosed the issue. The fluid integrity was terrible, so that is already a bad sign. On the test drive we confirmed the customers complaint. The vehicle was throwing a P0871 OD Pressure Switch Rationality code. This can be caused by a few things, but in this instance it cleared out so we can conclude its not an immediate electrical problem. Our diagnosis states there is an internal issue inside the transmission that can not be solved without removing it from the vehicle. A few days later the unit is removed from the truck and torn down on our bench, and what do you think we found?
For starters, the overdrive drum was toasted beyond repair. Every clutch inside was burnt to pieces, and the steels that go between were black in color. The switch valve inside the valve body was hanging open as well. Considering what this customer does for a living (hauling metal) he decided that it was worth while to rebuild the unit entirely with upgrades. We put in a new Solenoid pack, billet Overdrive drum, all new clutches, HD Billet Converter, TransGo Tow Pro Kit, and much more. This customer was satisfied with his fresh transmission rebuild and can go back to working in Bowling Green, KY.
