2017 Ram 2500 Performance Transmission Rebuild in Bowling Green, KY

Two weeks ago you probably read our article on a 2017 Ram 2500 (68RFE Transmission) and what we did to solve the customers complaints at the time. This article goes over a completely different vehicle, but the same initial issue. The main difference between these vehicles is what the customer is doing with them. This specific truck is not a daily driver nor a work truck, it is instead the owners "toy". What that means in the transmission world is pretty simple, this man is about to use and abuse this unit.

When the truck came in and we checked the fluid, we knew we were in for a good one. The turbo on this truck was bigger than my head, and I have quite a large head! The fluid was full but burnt, expected of course. Going on a test drive the vehicle had almost no 3rd gear. We spoke to the customer and he wanted us to go into it and complete an RDI (Remove, Disassemble, Inspect). We were happy to oblige. A few days later we went into the unit and discovered that the o/d drum was completely toasted, which was expected, along with the rear planetary. Luckily the customer was honest and explained he was going to go hard on the vehicle, he knew this unit was not going to be cheap to fix.

We did not cut a single corner on this transmission, its arguably the highest performant unit we have built in this shop within 2024 & 2025. A triple disc billet converter from Rev Max, Direct Drum kit from the same company, Thermal bypass, solenoid assembly, valve body recalibration kit, and much more. Once the unit was all finished on the build table we still had to install some fancy wiring to increase line pressure a bit, and boy did it. When our builder went for a test drive lets just say he had a very big smile on his face. He said, and I quote, "This is the best shifting 68RFE I have ever been in, and it's not even close". The customer picked up the vehicle later that day (with a fresh Transmission Rebuild) and I am sure he is out doing donuts having a blast here in Bowling Green, KY.
