Picture this: you're headed to Barren River for a weekend getaway of camping and fishing with the family. As you're cruising down the road, you suddenly feel a dreaded rumbling sensation, almost like you're hitting rumble strips. But you’re driving straight, so what could it be? Before long, the situation becomes clear. One minute, everything's fine, and the next, you're on the phone with a tow truck to rescue your vehicle. After a recommendation from the wrecker, your truck ends up at Wholesale Transmission, ready for some expert attention. This is exactly what happened to one of our customers recently.
With the truck in our hands, it's time to get to the bottom of the issue. Our first step is to diagnose the problem using a scanner to pull the diagnostic codes, and we quickly come across a P0700 code. Essentially, this is a generic indicator that there's a transmission problem, but it doesn’t provide much insight on its own. That’s not a problem for us. We discover that while the truck moves fine when it’s first started, it loses power and stops moving once it warms up—even struggling to move in reverse. (For more details on why this is important, check out our first article.) This behavior is a common sign of an internal transmission issue. When a transmission is experiencing wear and tear, it produces metal debris that can clog the filter. If the vehicle works when cold but fails when it heats up, it’s often because the filter is becoming blocked by metal particles. As the truck cools down, the metal settles, allowing the vehicle to temporarily function again.
Unfortunately for the customer, this points to the need for a Transmission rebuild. Fortunately, here at Wholesale Transmission Center, rebuilding 6L80 transmissions is one of our specialties. These units are common enough that we keep nearly all the parts on hand. To ensure the transmission stays reliable, we made some enhancements, including installing a heavy-duty billet torque converter, a superior shift kit, and finishing it off with a custom transmission tune. Now, with a freshly rebuilt transmission, the truck is ready to hit the road again, worry-free in Bowling Green, KY.
