2006 Chevy 3500 Dump Truck Transmission Rebuild in Franklin, KY
June 3, 2024
Take it from me folks, you do not want to continue driving on a vehicle when you feel the transmission start to have problems. This customer owns a farm and uses this dump truck, along with many others, for everyday functions around the farm. One day last year they discovered that they were losing reverse, instead of parking the vehicle and getting it looked that they continued to drive it for around two months. Right at the two month mark reverse went out completely, so they parked the dump truck for almost a full year before getting it looked at. "Hey Wholesale, I have a 4l80 Transmission with no reverse, can you guys look at it?", sure we say! Hoping we can possibly replace a seal in the reverse servo and solve their problems. Well, well, well, couldn't we have hoped.
The customer drives the vehicle too us. They say that on the way to us the transmission started to overheat and slip in high gear, that is obviously not good. We send one of our diagnosticians, Ben Jr, out to take a look. After checking the fluid he knew instantly that a servo would not save this transmission. You see, the fluid was pitch black, almost blacker than our office managers soul, it even smelled burnt! So what do we do? We give the customer the bad news, the torque converter has went down and put metal throughout the transmission, we will need to RDI the transmission to see what needs replaced for the vehicle to be in full order. The customer gives us the green light.
So, off we went. We pulled the transmission, hooked up our state of the art Hot Flush machine to get all of the metal out of the current cooler, and tore down the transmission. If there was not a square inch inside that transmission that did not have metal contaminating it, metal was everywhere! We disassembled every single drum, deep cleaning them in our three stage process. First handwashing the parts in mineral sprits, then into our hot parts washer spray cabinet, and finally in our ultrasonic cleaning machine to get every little bit of debris out. Once the Transmission Rebuild was installed with the heavy duty cooler, the customer can continue to dump whatever they desire in Franklin, KY.
